Bethel Sozo Ministry?

Sozo versus Bethel Redding sozo ministry

Is sozo found in the Bible and what is the context? Is the sozo ministry concept Biblical and are the methods used Biblical?

Sozo – save, deliver – Acts 4:9 (SBLGNT): σέσωσται

Acts 4:9 (SBLGNT): εἰ ἡμεῖς σήμερον ἀνακρινόμεθα ἐπὶ εὐεργεσίᾳ ἀνθρώπου ἀσθενοῦς, ἐν τίνι οὗτος σέσωσται,  [SBLGNT actually refers to sozo as saved/ delivered (also a healing)]

Acts 4:9 (ISV): If we are being questioned today for a good deed done for someone who was sick or to learn how this man was healed,

Sozo – demon deliver –  ἐσώθη (save deliver)

Luke 8:36 (SBLGNT): ἀπήγγειλαν δὲ αὐτοῖς οἱ ἰδόντες πῶς ἐσώθη ὁ δαιμονισθείς.

Luke 8:38 (ISV): Now the man from whom the demons had gone out kept begging Jesus to let him go with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying,

4982 ἐκσῴζω, σῴζω [sozo /sode·zo/] v. From a primary sos (contraction for obsolete saoz, “safe”); TDNT 7:965; TDNTA 1132; GK 1751 and 5392; 110 occurrences; AV translates as “save” 93 times, “make whole” nine times, “heal” three times, “be whole” twice, and translated miscellaneously three times. 1 to save, keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction. 1a one (from injury or peril). 1a1 to save a suffering one (from perishing), i.e. one suffering from disease, to make well, heal, restore to health. 1b1 to preserve one who is in danger of destruction, to save or rescue. 1b to save in the technical biblical sense. 1b1 negatively. 1b1a to deliver from the penalties of the Messianic judgment. 1b1b to save from the evils which obstruct the reception of the Messianic deliverance.  Strong, James. Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon 1995 : n. pag. Print

Before delving into the “sozo ministry”, it is important to understand that God’s Word and the Holy Spirit can bring clarity and strength to any situation.  1 Corinthians 14 describes a Christian gathering.  Two other references demonstrate Christian gatherings.  It is easy to see how this lifestyle is so important for all Christians.

Acts 2:42–47 (ISV) 42 The believers continued to devote themselves to what the apostles were teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to times of prayer. 43 A sense of fear came over everyone, and many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were united and shared everything with one another. 45 They made it their practice to sell their possessions and goods and to distribute the proceeds to anyone who was in need. 46 United in purpose, they went to the Temple every day, ate at each other’s homes, and shared their food with glad and humble hearts. 47 They were praising God and enjoying the good will of all the people. Every day the Lord was adding to their number those who were being saved.

Hebrews 10:22–25 (KJV 1900) 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

The church/ gathering was a place to build each other up, come along side and help each other. They did not hide troubles, hurts and sin from each other. It was not uncommon to meet daily. Formulas, methods, tools cannot work better than the Foundation left by the Apostles.   There is nothing but trouble when ignoring the Foundation.  In fact, when Christians do not follow God’s Word a need arises to comes up with a tool, method or formula to solve problems from not following God’s Word, example – sozo ministry, healing memories.  I am including additional Scripture that helped me (continues to help) at a very low point in my life See ENCOURAGEMENT below.

The website states: “The Sozo ministry is a unique inner healing and deliverance ministry in which the main aim is to get to the root of those things hindering your personal connection with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”

I have read many articles on “sozo ministry – technique/method and compared with God’s Word and I have concluded that the concept is not found in Scripture, no link to the method and tools were found in God’s Word.

The following explains how I reached that conclusion.

Apostle Paul’s words came to mind.  Scripture that speaks to this topic directly is Roman’s 7 and 8. Ask God, in Messiah Jesus name, for Holy Spirit Guidance-Council-Teaching as the Truth permeates while Scripture is read.

I have only picked a few highlights, hopefully to encourage reading both chapters.

Romans 7:15–17 (ISV) 15 I don’t understand what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I want to do, but instead do what I hate. 16 Now if I practice what I don’t want to do, I am admitting that the Law is good. 17 As it is, I am no longer the one who is doing it, but it is the sin that is living in me.  …

Romans 7:21–25 (ISV): So I find this to be a principle: when I want to do what is good, evil is right there with me. For I delight in the Law of God in my inner being, but I see in my body a different principle waging war with the Law in my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin that exists in my body. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is infected by death? Thank God through Jesus the Messiah, our Lord, because with my mind I myself can serve the Law of God, even while with my human nature I serve the law of sin. …

Romans 8:15–17 (ISV): “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with the Messiah—if, in fact, we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Romans 12:1–3 (ISV)  I therefore urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercies, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices that are holy and pleasing to God, for this is the reasonable way for you to worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but continually be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you may be able to determine what God’s will is—what is proper, pleasing, and perfect.

For by the grace given to me I ask every one of you not to think of yourself more highly than you should think, rather to think of yourself with sober judgment on the measure of faith that God has assigned each of you.

Apostle Paul specifically mentions the word “continually” like an ongoing battle/ effort.   No Apostle mentioned a technique to use.  What Apostle Paul told Timothy to do is what all Believers are to copy.

2 Timothy 3:10–17 (ISV) {Continue to Teach the Truth}

10 But you have observed my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my endurance, 11 and how I was persecuted and suffered in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. 12 Indeed, all who want to live a godly life in union with the Messiah Jesus will be persecuted. 13 But evil people and impostors will go from bad to worse as they deceive others and are themselves deceived.

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and found to be true, because you know from whom you learned it. 15 From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures that are able to give you the wisdom you need for salvation through faith in the Messiah Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good action.

Summarizing what the above Scripture speaks to me.

As long as I live my body, human nature, is tempted, serves sin; but with my mind I need to continually be transformed, renewing my mind to determine what God’s will is.  I should focus on the measure of faith God assigned to me personally.  I should share, encourage with God’s Word and come alongside those I come in contact with on my journey.

Messiah Jesus intended my relationship with God the Father should continually improve. When my life journey ends the sinful nature will no longer affect me.

BACKGROUND

  • Sozo ministry history
  •  Healing memories, transitioned to sozo
  • The idea is that something in a person’s mind/ memory is preventing a relationship with God the Father
  • Where did this technique come from?

It appears that before sozo ministry inner healing/healing of memories existed.  Inner healing is attributed to Agnes Sanford (1897–1982) is considered to be the mother of the inner healing movement {Wikipedia}

The Four doors, a deliverance tool, came from a 1997 revival in Argentina! There are other tools that have been incorporated over the years.  Other NAR apostles have added tools or increased its awareness, including New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) apostles Bill Johnson, Randy Clark and Peter Wagner.

Note: Most (adaptions) add that it is OK to get what the Holy Spirit said wrong, they are still learning!

One problem for analyzing the sozo method is that there is a claimed difference from Bethel Redding’s Leibscher and the sozo method documents found online.  It must be noted that some of the earlier documents must have been extracted before being hidden behind websites requiring a secure login or removed altogether.   Case in point, one document written by Jim Banks (Reference 2) was written and available in 2006? Now that document is no longer available online, at least without a username and password.  I received the document from “https://closingstages.net “, see REFERENCE 2 below.

Why would these online method documents be removed?  Two hypotheses are reduced income from selling the tools and making it harder for questioning eyes, Truth seekers.

What is the basis for these two claims?  Every time a sozo technique document was clicked to download the next step is to register or taken to a store to purchase CDs or books.  The other giveaway was Theresa Leibscher’s sozo technique justification response from claims it is New Age.  (Reference [Begin: Learn the Truth About This Life-Changing Ministry] )

Fortunately, it is still possible to find some older posts and documents to discover the now protected technique and its history.

Where does one begin to determine if a book, article, method, for example, is Biblical- Truth?

Basis – Assumption

By definition, a Follower of Messiah Jesus, a Christian, believes that God’s Word is final, Holy Spirit breathed and inerrant.  Any extra Biblical documents must be questioned and compared with the Bible.

What brought my focus to the sozo ministry?

I am still on pilgrimage for Truth. On my pilgrimage, the fall of 1967, I called out to Jesus and His Helper came. Since then I have read many doctrines, theologies and methodologies on my journey.  Deceivers and Worldly Wisemen are plentiful on the journey.  I am trying to be a Help to others on their journey by sharing what I have learned and how I came to a specific conclusion – hopefully help prevent straying off the Narrow Path.

I am somewhat familiar with its predecessor, “memory healing” and also heard about sozo several years ago but delayed any proper Berean study until now.  I am familiar with the healing of memories because I know an individual who tried “healing of memories” in the mid-70s to save a marriage.  The process did not work.

The research of Bethel Redding brought it back to light.  However, a discovery was made that it did not originally appear at Bethel Redding.  Indication is that “healing memories ministry” may have been in the “sozo ministry” lineage.  NAR Peter Wagner was also involved in the present form of “sozo ministry”.  Bethel Redding popularized it and now it has spread all over the world.  Bethel Redding proposes two healing ministries, sozo and healing rooms.

The assumption is that if someone claiming to be a Christian performs signs and wonders, prophecies, heals or in this case an inner healing is successful it must be the Holy Spirit or God!

This assumption or hypothesis is faulty.   Remember that a theorem requires that all tests or conditions support the theorem.  God’s Word is full of warnings regarding false teachers, prophets and Christ’s.  If there is one aspect of the doctrine, method or theology that violates or contradicts the Foundation established by the Apostles it is false, another gospel.  But you ask, why or how can a non-Christian perform signs and wonders or why are there success from the sozo method?  I am glad you asked.  The Bible contains several instances where pagans (anti-Christ or anti-God) perform miracles, signs and wonders.  There is also one very important verse in the New Testament that is overlooked or ignored.  Consider the Egyptian sorcerers who could duplicate the serpent and only two of the ten miracle-plagues God worked through Moses.  Consider also Simon in Samaria performed signs and wonders wowing the Samaritans.  The he became a Follower of Jesus.  The Scripture often ignored is Matthew 7:21-23 (ISV) (Luke 6:46; 13:25–27) 21 “Not everyone who keeps saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will get into the kingdom from heaven, but only the person who keeps doing the will of my Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, we prophesied in your name, drove out demons in your name, and performed many miracles in your name, didn’t we?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who practice evil!’ ”

It is puzzling yet clear that miracles, signs and wonders does not require one to be a Christian! Check God’s Word yourself to verify Truth.  There are other Biblical references which hopefully the reader will search out.

God provided Mankind with a document that helps His Creation understand Him and to help His Creation to know Truth and not be deceived by the Enemy.  That document is God’s Word.

James 1:16–18 (KJV 1900) 16 Do not err, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Colossians 2 2 Peter 2:1–3 We are to be ever vigilant. Is the sozo ministry based on God’s Word or man’s words? Let us find out.

[My embedded comments “[]”, Note: This article appears to be an accurate description of the sozo methodology.  The article tries to respond to complaints levied against the sozo ministry since 1997. ]

“But when Sozo is exercised correctly, practitioners insist it can deliver people from spiritual bondage with dignity. Liebscher has been doing Sozo since 1997 and is familiar with the many criticisms leveled against her work.”

[When reading this article pay close attention to the claims and justifications.]

“Perhaps the most common myth about Sozo ministry is that it’s based on New Age practices. But Liebscher says the critics have it backward: “The New Age stuff stole all of that from Christianity anyway, so a lot of what is going to be happening here with Bethel Sozo and even in Bethel Church is probably going to be viewed—is viewed—as New Age stuff or too close to New Age stuff.” “

[“New Age stole from Christianity” This claim requires a reference, proof, especially in God’s Word.  I cannot find the sozo tools mentioned in the Bible so I do not accept this quote as valid.  “Bethel Sozo and even in Bethel Church is probably going to be viewed … New Age”.  I agree with this claim.]

“Visualization practices or guided imagery—are completely absent from true Sozo sessions. [Other (apparently) non-Bethel practitioners must be following a non-Bethel approach as they do use guided imagery. See REFERENCE 2, for example.]

“Finally, some believers are simply wary of a potentially extrabiblical ministry. Liebscher says that stems from a misunderstanding of the Greek word sozo; Jesus practiced sozo ministry to people around Him throughout the New Testament.”

[The author knows her critics, however, her “misunderstanding” comment does not help her position!  I do not find a link between the “sozo technique” and  the Bible, including the Biblical usage of sozo.  Furthermore, Christ Jesus is the Word of God and therefore, cannot be extra-Biblical.  I do not read in God’s Word where Jesus or the Apostles followed a “sozo” methodology.   I believe assigning what Jesus did on Earth to “Sozo ministry or methodology” demonstrates how little is really known about God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and the God-breathed written Word.]

“But the concept of sozo—being saved, healed and delivered—in and of itself is a great word study.”

[Not sure what the point of this statement is.    Every word, dot and tittle in God’s Word  is important. Jesus knew that there existed individuals who could perform miracles and signs and wonders but then said depart from me I never knew you!]

“The challenge is there are so many hurting people who just want to come in and have you wave a magic wand over them or snap your fingers and just make everything go away,” Liebscher says. “For some people, it’s just so hard for them to understand and receive Father God’s truth. There are times when people just want a magic wand, and I don’t carry a magic wand. It’s up to the four of them—the client and the three members of the Godhead.”

[The “magic wand” concept is what is promised or implied by “sozo ministry”, Bethel Redding and NAR.] [End: Learn the Truth About This Life-Changing Ministry]

No Apostle implied that a Christian’s life would be without challenges, pain, suffering (in any form). Consider that all except Apostle John died a martyr’s death.  How would many or most western Christians deal with becoming a martyr for the Faith?  I certainly do not know, but trust that God would grant me courage and the faith should that happen.  Apostle Paul says that God works all things to his purpose.  The Apostles also told Christian’s to build each other up, come along side and disciple others during as we travel our life journey.

Bill Johnson states:

http://bjm.org/qa/is-it-always-gods-will-to-heal-someone/

Bill Johnson: question and answer: “Is it Always God’s will to heal someone?”, see also REFERENCE 6.

How can God choose not to heal someone when He already purchased their healing? Was His blood enough for all sin, or just certain sins? Were the stripes He bore only for certain illnesses, or certain seasons of time? When He bore stripes in His body He made a payment for our miracle. He already decided to heal. You can’t decide not to buy something after you’ve already bought it.

Isaiah 53:5 (Tanakh)  5But he was wounded because of our sins, Crushed because of our iniquities. He bore the chastisement that made us whole, And by his bruises we were healed.

1 Peter 2:21–25 (KJV 1900) 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. 25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

Heal – Greek – 2390 ἰάομαι [iaomai /ee·ah·om·ahee/] v. Middle voice of apparently a primary verb; TDNT 3:194; TDNTA 344; GK 2615; 28 occurrences; AV translates as “heal” 26 times, and “make whole” twice. 1 to cure, heal. 2 to make whole. 2A to free from errors and sins, to bring about (one’s) salvation. Strong, James. Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon 1995 : n. pag. Print.

[End of article by Bill Johnson]

I believe much of the claims (sozo ministry and healing rooms) made by NAR apostle Bill Johnson and other NAR-like individuals are based on a misunderstanding of Isaiah 53 and  1 Peter 2:21–25. See a previous blog on this: “https://wordpress.com/block-editor/post/pilgrimageoftruth.wordpress.com/122 ” A brief summary, Adam broke the intended relationship we were meant to have with God the Father. Jesus’ death on the cross was to remedy that.  The context is sin and the punishment Jesus bore for all our sins to make payment (redeem).  If the two Biblical references were meant as physical/emotional healing, I believe that when we first accepted His Gift of Salvation (heal) we would have been healed at that moment.  When I accepted and received God’s gift, Jesus, I was healed at that moment but I was not physically/emotionally healed and I have not witnessed anyone else either.  Bill Johnson’s hypothesis of physical/emotional healing is obviously not 100% true, therefore, his claim is false and must be ignored.  Therefore, ALL “stripes –healing” claims based on his hypothesis are false.  I observed in the 70s that this claim was false, plus, recently learned that the context of Scripture does not support a physical/emotional healing. Jesus healed our relationship with God the Father.   What is the point of being physically healed but not our relation with the Father and we end up in Hell!

The assumption that God’s Word promised all should be physically/emotionally healed does great damage to Christians.  Normally, the client which was not healed is now feeling [more] worthless or angry because they were supposed to be healed and were not.

An interesting observation, available to anyone, is going to a church which claims this and look around.  I have been to at least one and have also seen individuals associated with Bethel Redding who are not healed (emotionally or physically).  When asked, an answer is not given.  As shown above, “apostle” Bill Johnson admitted that not everyone is healed; he claims to be an apostle equal to or greater than Apostle Paul or even Jesus!  One comment I read online – why does Bill Johnson still wear glasses?

Is there any reason to go deeper into the tools of sozo ministry?

Some of the current tools include the following: Four Doors – they began experimenting with this tool and found that these four doors that the demonic can gain access to our lives through were a very effective tool for releasing inner healing even in short prayer sessions. Father Ladder – Sozo ministry continues to evolve and include tools into the methodology!

https://closingstages.net/2012/07/31/victims-of-johnsons-sozo-ministry-speak-out/

I recommend that Believers focus on God’s Word.  Man’s wisdom, tools, methods cannot compare to the Foundation the 12+1  Apostles left – God’s Word. Man’s wisdom is faulty and usually leads to places Jesus never intended us to go.  Christ Jesus and the Apostles warned of error – yet too often it is ignored because it just sounds good!

Bill Johnson’s answer that not everyone is healed also applies to their sozo methodology.

In my 60+ years of living, I have seen how easy it is for Man to come up with “new and improved” religions/ beliefs.  In my opinion, the newer they are the stranger, “out-there”, they are.  Unfortunately, many of them claim to be Christian and hence Bible based.  The NAR and NAR-like are ones that are very strange and very popular.  Their following grows daily.  What is unfortunate is that the followers are seeking something and are trusting that their leaders are not leading them astray.

As I read about Sozo ministries, New Apostolic Reformation and charismania I see a pattern.  There are individuals who maybe start out on the straight and narrow and end up vying for wealth, power, fame and how many people they can get to follow them.  Many people are just followers wanting someone to tell them what to believe and what to do.  Remember the Israelites who wanted a king like all the other nations.    Then there are those who are searching for Truth and discover the error.

Revelation 3:6 (ISV) ‘Let everyone listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.’ ”

Sozo ministry claims to help heal your relationship with God to enable you to fulfill your destiny!

Now I understand what I have been hearing.  The following is consistent with the Bethel Redding defection -spirit of religion, going outside the box and NAR for example. Reading the following excerpt will bring clarity to the error.

“Opening Client Visualization

Many people believe that they do not have a visual compliment to engaging God. They have been taught, or the enemy has led them to believe, that their primary, if not only, interaction with God is through His written word, the Bible. This is typical of most folks with mainline evangelical denominational roots. In order to make the ministry time fruitful for a client, we often have to help them to “open their spirit eyes”.

Many people believe that God is accessible only through their minds and hence, all experience that is not absolutely logical (from their perspective) is not only not probable, but more to the point, not possible. Consequently, they have never tried any other method of interacting with Him. That doesn’t mean that is not another method, only that they have never entertained the idea that there is another one”

I found the above on a website.  I reached out to the blogger and was provided with the entire document by Jim Banks: SOZO Ministry Technique; Opening Client Visualization; Jim Banks    House of Healing Ministries; P.O. Box 15514 Asheville, NC   28813; 2/14/06. I could not find the source for the document.  It is possible that originally Jim Banks was openly using sozo methodology and may have been told to at least stop posting it.

If the above does not concern you or set your spiritual hair standing up, you should re-read the many warnings of Jesus and the Apostles.

The following three points in the article; 1) Visual compliment – [seeing God?],  2) Enemy – [who is the enemy here?], 3) Primary, if not only, interaction with God is through His written word, the Bible – [What he really said is that the Enemy wants Christians to believe that their primary, if not only, interaction with God is through His written word, the Bible. Which means that there are other ways!  Unraveling text using negative meaning is tricky. ]

This says the Bible is not the only source, which by the way, is the only way to justify other “methods” or write your own bible! If science basics, math theorems and even language grammar are thrown out an alternate reality will be created, however, anyone following this alternate reality will ultimately reap chaos, emptiness or death. How many souls will end up in Hell?

For a time, a follower of this alternate reality may live off a “spiritual” high but that cannot last forever.

If the followers wake up how many will end up spiritually crippled or angry at God for allowing them to be deceived?

The 12+1 Apostles were given a unique task, establishing the Foundation for the Church, the New Testament.  In the New Testament are many warnings, including all aspects of Bethel Redding’s “sozo ministry”; which is actually the foundation of Bethel Redding and the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR).

“The grass dries up and the flower drops off, but the word of the Lord lasts forever.” Now this word is the good news that was announced to you.”  https://ref.ly/1Pe1.24-25 via the Logos Bible Android app.

“Here is another reason why we constantly give thanks to God: When you received God’s word, which you heard from us, you did not accept it as the word of humans but for what it really is—the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.” https://ref.ly/1Th2.13 via the Logos Bible Android app.

Evangelical denomination roots

It is interesting that the word “evangelical” is used; possibly it is felt that that group tends to rely on the Bible more?

I know that error exists in post-Reformation churches but instead of listening to the Holy Spirit through God’s Word and correcting the errors new error is injected as in the case of Bethel Redding /NAR.

“open their eyes”

Is it not true that the Serpent encouraged Eve to open her eyes? Over the millennium the Bible records  eye openings and the outcome.  Satan tried to open Jesus’ eyes to tempt Him, Jesus resisted – to our advantage.  The Apostles provided examples and warnings to “eye opening”, especially Apostle John’s Revelation.

God is accessible only through their minds

All experience that is not absolutely logical is not only not probable…

Maybe Biology is not a strong point here. How do humans process any information; in the brain! Although some consider the mind not to be material, all thought and experience use the material part of the brain for interpretation or conversion!

I think the “experience” statement is very ignorant.  Consider that Christianity (Messianic Judaism) in its entirety is considered by most non-Christians illogical (not even close to logical)!

Not tried any other method of interacting with Him –

Those who do not truly know the contents of the Bible put this claim in.  Every Christian should know that the Bible is full of those rebelling against God’s method /plan and trying to interact with something they claim to be God!

Here are just a very few e samples of those who have tried other methods of interacting, “opened their eyes”, went “outside the box” and are mentioned in the Bible:

  •  King Saul sought a sorcerer to talk to Samuel
  •  Balaam heard God but desired fortune and fame more.   Caused the death of  24,000 men.
  • 2 Peter 2:15,  Jude 1:11, Revelation 2:14   From <https://www.gotquestions.org/Balaam-in-the-Bible.html>
  • Judas of Iscariot sold his soul for 30 pieces of silver
  • Simon the sorcerer on Samaria opened his eyes to the wrong power at first –

Acts 8:9–13 (ISV) Now in that city there was a man named Simon. He was practicing occult arts and thrilling the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great. 10 Everyone from the least to the greatest paid close attention to him, saying, “This is what we call the great power of God!” 11 They paid careful attention to him because he had thrilled them for a long time with his occult performances. 12 But when Philip proclaimed the good news about the kingdom of God and about the name of Jesus the Messiah, men and women believed and were baptized. 13 Even Simon believed, and after he was baptized he became devoted to Philip. He was amazed to see the signs and great miracles that were happening.

Visual compliment – I am not exactly sure what this means.  [Maybe] What exactly do you want to see?  The Israelites could not even bare to see the afterglow after Moses was [only] near God’s presence!

God said that anyone who saw Him directly would die.  Who wants to see God?  Jesus said those who saw Him saw the Father.

Closing Thoughts

If everyone had a choice to be physically healed and emotionally healed, who would not choose to be?  If God’s Word made that claim why has it not happened? Even a NAR apostle says not everyone is healed.    It is easy to blame the “client” because of sin or some issue.  Then those not healed feel worse than they came in.  The Bible does claim to heal the relationship between God and those accepting His Gift of Salvation.  God’s Word does provide the Holy Spirit who Comforts, Guides, Counsels and Teaches as we rely on the Written Word, the Bible.    Christians are to come alongside other Believers to build up and encourage and keep the focus on God’s Word.  I can attest to how important  God’s Word, Holy Spirit and fellow Believers are in staying the course. I personally believe I needed to be humbled or broken enough for me to actually understand the Holy Spirit’s Counsel, before accepting Man’s wisdom as truth pause and search God’s Word and ask the Holy Spirit for Guidance.

2 Corinthians 10:1-6 (KJV 1900) 1 Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

Opening Client Visualization

That doesn’t mean that is not another method, only that they have never entertained the idea that there is another one.

What the Sozo session leader must do is to help open their minds, hearts and spirits to another method of connecting with God. We can do this by a number of methods, principally by leading the Sozoee through a series of simple exercises to expand their repertoire of sensing, hearing, feeling and connecting with God.

What To Do First

Tell them that,” You have the easy job today. You are simply going to report what goes on.  You and God are the only ones who know what’s going on during portions of the session.  I will be in the dark without their reports. So I’ll be asking questions to find out what’s happening, or seeking clarification on what was reported. As I do, don’t break out of the process – don’t open your eyes, just stay with it.”

Inform them that, “My name is ____________ and I am the leader of your session, and ___________ is your 2nd.  We will be writing notes to each other in order to communicate. We are doing it in writing in an attempt to keep distraction to a minimum. So don’t get excited if from time to time you hear pens scratching on paper, or the two us leaning about. We’re just trying to read what was written.“

Tell them to, “Get in a relaxed position, close their eyes and take a deep breath.”

The next thing to do is the lead the Sozoee in a prayer which has the Sozoee submitting their spirit, soul and body to the Holy Spirit during the session.  It may go something like this…

Repeat after me … “Father, I come to you in the name of your son Jesus, submitting my whole being to your Holy Spirit during this process. I submit my mind, my imagination, my thoughts, my spirit, soul and body to you for your direction and healing. I hereby express my trust in you and put myself into your care.”

Then we start a series of exercises;

You can start by asking them to remember the happiest day of their life. Pick a specific event if you like, such as their favorite birthday. Once they dredge up the memory of the event, ask them to tell you who was there, what happened and particularly how they felt. Spend a few minutes probing for all their emotions, such as, “What did you have in your heart for each attendee or participant?”  If it is a vivid memory, ask them, “Do you recall what the principal people in the memory said to you during the event, or how they made you feel by their presence?”

Once they’ve worked their way completely through the memory, give them a little instruction. Tell them that you are not looking for them to process this through their head but through their emotions. And that you are going to walk them through another exercise or two to make sure they have a feel for what the process is going to “feel”

like.  Specifically use the word “feel”because most people are geared to processing everything with their mind only.

You may follow with one or more of the following to reinforce the previous exercise.

“When I say a word, tell me what you see and describe it for me … a coke bottle … now describe it … a tree … a building … the Father God … Jesus … The Holy Sprit …” “When I give you a word for a particular emotion, describe what your heart senses … love; anger; anxiety; fear; abandonment; rejection”

Ask any clarification questions needed to be sure that they have made a full and accurate response with their replies. Once you’ve completed this list, including any others you feel the Holy Spirit is adding to it, ask the following …

“Was there anything in any of those emotions that you recognize as being familiar?”

If there is a YES, ask them to tell you about it. Ask them if they remember the first time they felt that emotion.  If they can’t remember the first time, ask them, “When was the last time they felt that emotion?”  If can recall an event, this may be your Sozo Session starting point.

You have laid some appropriate ground work and it is time to start into your full Sozo session.

Further Help With Lack of Visualization

A.            If prompted by the Holy Spirit, you will need to lead them in a series of prayers,  declarations and renunciations of lies believed, false teachings received, judgments and vows made which prohibit them for communicating with God.

                1. “I break agreement with any lies I believe about my ability to hear, see or feel God/Jesus/Holy Spirit, including; ‘I cannot see, hear or feel God.’; ‘I am not supposed to hear, see or feel God.’ Or any other such lie. I step into agreement with God that says in John 10, My sheep hear my voice and I know them and give them eternal life.”

                2.  “I break agreement with and renounce any teaching that I have had, from any source, which declares that; I cannot hear God; I cannot feel God; I cannot see God; I’m not supposed to see/hear/feel God; That spiritual gifts are not for today; I have no spiritual gifts nor ability to operate in them. I come out of agreement with any teacher that has declared any of the above to me. I forgive them, release them and bless them..”

                3.  “I renounce any vow that I have made which declares that I cannot hear, see or feel God; that I’ll never be able to hear/see/feel God; That those who do are foolish or any other such curse or judgment”.

Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit in dealing with specific wounding in or from the church (clergy, teachers, authorities) which has stunted their ability to see, hear and feel God.

Also check with the Holy Spirit to determine if there are any generational curses against them which thwarts their ability to sense God on any level.

B.            What do you do if they are still not able to get to any memories, connect emotionally with a memory, or can’t see a picture, or visualize anything?

The place to look is mild dissociation. Many men and some women who have had childhoods bereft of the warm, nurturing love of a father and mother have a tendency toward mild dissociation – a natural escape mechanism to deal with emotional pain as we are growing up. What happens is when the pain of not being consistently warmly received, appreciated and valued by parents becomes to great to deal with, the child simply shuts off all emotion. The child turns inward in order to live life.

Whether it is lived through the intellect only, or through the imagination, the damage is the same. Walls are built to keep out additional emotional pain. Unfortunately, the wall we build are indiscriminate on what they keep out. They will also keep out love as well. So one of the keys is get the Sozoee to voluntarily begin a process of dropping the walls. The first wall is processing every thing through the mind, including interacting with God.

That first wall is control.

To deal with this wall paint a picture of them driving a car, with them behind the wheel. Ask them if they would mind if Jesus drove the car? Then ask them if they would mind getting in the back seat and allowing him to control the vehicle? Do get in a hurry here.  They’ve usually invested a lot of time and thought to get to this place.  You cannot overcome their control by attempting to be controlling yourself.

If you are having difficulty getting them to relinquish control, ask them if the “intellectual self, the brainy guy (or girl) can go into ‘standby’ mode, because you would like to talk to the ‘emotional self’.  Would that be okay for a little while?” If they say YES, speak something comforting to Mr. Intellectual Man, such as “Are you doing okay Intellectual Jim?”  Be prepared to respond to whatever is brought up if the answer is no.

Once everyone is at peace with the process, then go through the car driving picture with them again. This time direct your questions to “emotional Jane/Jim (name)”. Can Jesus drive the car while you just go along for the ride?

If the answer is NO, ask Miss emotional Jane what is uncomfortable about that?  Then pay attention because you are likely getting closer to the issue this Sozo session will eventually deal with. Deal with whatever objection is brought up.  Assure them that you understand that this is unfamiliar territory and it may be uncomfortable because it is unfamiliar, but that you will not take them to any place they are not willing to go. The key to moving on is making them feel safe.  You’ll not likely proceed without them having that comfort.

Once Mr. Intellectual has agreed to get in the back seat and let Jesus drive, you can continue with the session.  Be on the lookout for other protectors that may prevent getting to other issues.

Leslie Pitts

In many political discussions today when someone does not want, or is unable, to express a lucid argument they launch ad hominem attacks against their opponents.

“You say that because you are a bigot!” “You have this position because you are a racist!” The equivalent tactic in the sozo discussions is always: “You are a Pharisee!” Yawn I have been posting and reading posts about sozo for over a decade. I am yet to witness one single sozo proponent do anything other than attack the sozo opponents, and all too often with reference to the Pharisees.

Leslie, why don’t you make an argument in favor of sozo? Why don’t you address any of the following sozo practices:    Where does the scripture teach us to go back and heal our memories?    Where does the scripture teach us to engage in curse deliverance?    Where does the scripture teach that Christians need to be delivered of demonic possession?    Why do the sozo proponents find it so difficult to engage in an idea exchange about their practices? Why is there first line of defense usually: “You are a Pharisee!” Could it be they don’t have any other logical defense? Are they unable to find scriptural support for their beliefs?

My first post on here was 2012 if my memory is correct. Closingstages is, as far as I know, the single most read anti-sozo blog site on the planet. Tens of thousands of people view these blogs every year and yet not one single sozo proponent is willing to engage in a logical, honest, scriptural dialog about their practices. If what I recently heard is accurate, Bethel sozo claims approximately 80 sozo centers worldwide—I think I have that correct. Is their no one within that organization willing to defend what they are doing? Memory Victim “

Inner Healing/Healing of Memories

Christian or Occult?*

“Healing of the memories, or inner healing, or healing of the emotions has its roots in the teachings of anti-Christian and occultist, Agnes Sanford. It was carried on after her death by those she influenced, such as lay therapists Ruth Carter Stapleton (deceased sister of Jimmy Carter), Rosalind Rinker, John and Paula Sandford (currently of Elijah House, a demon-deliverance and memory healing center in Port Falls, Idaho), William Vaswig (of Renovaré fame), Rita Bennett, and others. John Wimber, David Yonggi Cho, Robert Schuller, and Norman Vincent Peale are some of the well-known pop psychological practitioners of inner healing, but it has spread widely in so- called evangelical circles in a more sophisticated form”

And, while the inner-healers may conjure up a “Jesus” and recite Bible verses, such inner healing is not Biblical. Jesus said, “If ye continue in My Word, then are ye My disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (Jn. 8:31-32).

How to Open Your Spiritual Eyes

Our imagination is another word for using our mind. Our imagination is like an organ created by God so we could communicate with an unseen realm. Our imagination is our “spiritual eyes” or as the following verse refers to as the “eyes of our heart”.

Is it Always God’s will to heal someone? How can God choose not to heal someone when He already purchased their healing? ….

7. If someone isn’t healed, realize the problem isn’t God, and seek Him for direction as well as personal breakthrough (greater anointing for consistency in healing). Also, don’t take it personal. There are other factors involved besides great faith. That is only one element in the equation. Just learn to do your best to be faithful to His gospel, and honor Him for the results. It’s also not wise to blame the person who is sick.”

[I do not find any Scripture which states Jesus/God purchased our physical healing with His Blood.  I would say it this way.  There is no promise that all are to be healed.  Stop giving people false hope.  What human knows the mind of God?  As I have stated in another blog there is no Scripture stating that everyone is to be physical or mentally healed in their physical body – see https://wordpress.com/block-editor/post/pilgrimageoftruth.wordpress.com/122 I do believe, as stated above, that if Christians spent more time building each other up and coming alongside our brothers and sisters and discipling (not just once a week) that mental and emotional issues could be continually brought under the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10. ]

Healing, By Brandon Showalter, CP Reporter

Quoted John Piper: The question about why some people are healed and others are not when people pray is one John Piper struggles with.

“We have strong promises from Jesus, in John 15 and John 16 and Mark 11 and elsewhere, that whenever we ask and believe that we have what we asked for, we will receive it. The other piece is Jesus’s words ‘nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.'”

For example, he went on to say, in Matthew 7 Jesus asks his followers if they “who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him.”

The author, Brandon Showalter also listed a statement from Bethel Redding, Bill Johnson after making the following comment – Yet others have suggested that the nature of God’s goodness is what is in dispute.

Bill Johnson: “The conflict [in the church] is over the goodness of God,” said Bill Johnson, senior leader of Bethel Church in Redding, California, in a 2016 interview with The Christian Post about his book “God Is Good: He’s Better Than You Think.”

ENCOURAGEMENT

Biblical approach

I will share what helped me in times of distress.  Another brother came along side me and encouraged me to pray, memorize, read, meditate and “eat” God’s Word.  Although memorization is difficult for me, I was able to recall a few Scriptures when life became difficult.  Even though the verses were short, it really helped to recall immediately as I asked God for strength and the Helper came along side.

It is important to know how much God cares for us.  However, it is not uncommon for someone to impose their free will upon another human causing great harm whether it is emotional/mind or physical injury or death.    Environment such as earthquakes, flooding and hurricanes also causes suffering, pain or death.

Psalm 139:1–18 (NIV84) 1 O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord. 5 You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. 7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” 12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. 13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, 16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.

Psalm 139:19–24 (NIV84) 19 If only you would slay the wicked, O God! Away from me, you bloodthirsty men! 20 They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name. 21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord, and abhor those who rise up against you? 22 I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies. 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Matthew 18:15–20 (ISV)  Dealing with a Brother who Sins ; (Luke 17:3) 15 “If your brother sins against you, go and confront him while the two of you are alone. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother. 16 But if he doesn’t listen, take one or two others with you so that ‘every word may be confirmed by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17 If, however, he ignores them, tell it to the congregation. If he also ignores the congregation, regard him as a gentile and a tax collector. 18 “I tell all of you with certainty, whatever you prohibit on earth will have been prohibited in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will have been permitted in heaven. 19 Furthermore, I tell all of you with certainty that if two of you agree on earth about anything you request, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven, 20 because where two or three have come together in my name, I am there among them.”

This does not mean that we wait for someone to confront us.  Ideally, if you offend someone, it is best if you seek forgiveness first.  It is best to mend relationships quickly else Satan may take the opportunity and interferes to disrupt the Body of Christ.

Luke 12:7 – “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.

{Zavada, Jack. “Comforting Bible Verses.”

Joshua 1:8-9 – Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. (NIV)

Psalm 27:1 – The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? (NIV)

Psalm 119:76 – May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant. (NIV)

Isaiah 57:1-2 – Good people pass away; the godly often die before their time. But no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting them from the evil to come. For those who follow godly paths will rest in peace when they die. (NIV)

Isaiah 12:2 – Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. (NIV)

John 14:27 – Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (NIV)

John 16:7 – Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. (NIV)

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 – Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. (NIV) }

The enemy does not want Christians to trust or have a strong relationship in God the Father.

2 Corinthians 10:3–6 (KJV 1900)  For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

Do not waver in Faith James 1:6 (KJV 1900)  But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. The Lord is my Strength and Protector

Psalm 27 (KJV 1900)  A Psalm of David. The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, They stumbled and fell. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: Though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: In the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; He shall set me up upon a rock. And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: Therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord. Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice: Have mercy also upon me, and answer me. When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek. Hide not thy face far from me; Put not thy servant away in anger: Thou hast been my help; leave me not, Neither forsake me, O God of my salvation. 10  When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the Lord will take me up. 11  Teach me thy way, O Lord, And lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. 12  Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: For false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty. 13  I had fainted, unless I had believed To see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. 14  Wait on the Lord: Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: Wait, I say, on the Lord.

Psalm 34:1-22 …

Psalm 34:7–8 (KJV 1900) The angel of the Lord encampeth Round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. O taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
